General Description

Perennial from a stout creeping rhizome with firm, rough, grey-green leaves up to 1 cm. wide, erect stems to 1 m. high and a hemispherical white head up to 2 cm. across of coarse Mariscus-like spikelefcs subtended by spreading bracts; anthers large, yellow; montane savanna, conspicuous after burning.

Rhizome oblique, 4 by 1/8– 1/6 in., clothed by stout ovate acute striate pale brown scales 1/2– 2/3 in. long. Stem solitary on the rhizome, 4–12 in. long. Leaves often as long as the stem, 1/6 in. broad. Bracts and head as of C. compactus, Lam.

Habitat
